Milk thistle, also known as Blessed Thistle, Mary Thistle, and Holy Thistle, is an annual or biannual plant with beautiful purple flowering heads. It’s related to the daisy and ragweed families, but this little plant has some remarkable qualities and health benefits for us that we’ll discuss in just a bit.
First century Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder, is known to have discovered milk thistle as useful when dealing with his own health issues. He documented that he was progressively feeling a detoxing and cleansing effect from what he attributed to ingesting milk thistle nightly. Additionally, the Greek physician, Dioscorides, is said to have incorporated milk thistle into his kidney and liver disease healing regimes; he cites its use in his encyclopedia of medicinal plants that he created while traveling with the army. You may have noticed that we often refer to his work because so many of our herbs were subjects of his studies.
The primary active ingredient is silymarin, which is a powerful antioxidant. This allows the plant to fight off free radicals and maintain it’s biological health through stressful and otherwise harmful environments. Silymarin protects the plant and its stunning little flower and numerous studies have been done to show that the same antioxidant that protects Milk Thistle can also protect us when ingested. Not only does it protect us but it’s an amazing detox and cleanse for the body. We all know that everything (inside and out) seems to look better, work better and operate more efficiently when clean. The body is no exception. Our skin clears, our joints feel more mobile, we’re less tired, and our mind seems to be energized and renewed. Buddha Teas Organic Milk Thistle Tea is one of the best (and most delicious) ways to get a powerful dose of this herbal wonder. Drink up and feel the changes!
Our organic Milk Thistle Tea has an extremely mild and ever so slightly sweet taste. It’s likely one of the easiest teas to get added benefit because it can be mixed with practically anything but goes especially well with Buddha Teas Ginger and Turmeric or Buddha Teas Mushroom Wellness Blend.
